The Junta restores traffic at the traffic circle of La Zubia after the remodeling works
The Consejería de Fomento has completed more than one month ahead of schedule the works to improve the southern access to Granada.

The Consejería de Fomento, Articulación del Territorio y Vivienda has put into service the traffic circle of La Zubia after the remodeling works that improve its connection with the Ronda Sur and enable a platform reserved for buses and high occupancy vehicles (BUS-VAO lane) in the southern access to Granada. With today's works, the circulation in one of the main accesses to Granada has been reestablished.

The territorial delegate of Development in Granada, Antonio Ayllón, thanked the company awarded the contract, Hidráulicas y Viales, which has accelerated the execution so that "the commissioning occurs a month ahead of schedule, which has allowed the bulk of traffic cuts have occurred in summer, when fewer vehicles circulate in this access. "We knew it was a delicate point for the traffic of the city and, therefore, the works have been planned with care and, above all, giving information to the minute of each cut to those affected," said the delegate, who recalled the communication channels that have been enabled these months, as a web (rotondazubia.com), a whatsapp channel and social networks.

The works, which began on October 21, 2021 with an initial execution period of 12 months and a budget of 1,038,441 euros, have consisted of the construction of a reserved platform from La Zubia to Granada in the section of the intersection of the A-4028 regional road and the GR-3211 provincial road. For the proper functioning of this platform, a new circular traffic circle has been designed one hundred meters away from the existing one -in the direction of La Zubia and Cájar- which joins both roads.

The traffic circle facilitates the incorporations in the different routes and favors the creation of a BUS-VAO lane that will be used, for example, by the buses of the Metropolitan Transport Consortium of the Granada area to reduce their journey times. Up to 63 daily expeditions circulate through this access to the city, with a balance of 700,000 passengers per year.

In addition, work has been carried out on all the roads in the area to improve traffic flow and give priority to public transport. The width of the platforms of three of the four branches at the junction of kilometer 2 of the Ronda Sur (A-395) has been modified. Likewise, two of the existing segregated lanes have been set back and the longitudinal and transversal drainage has been adapted to the new situation. Similarly, the numerous existing services have been replaced (street lighting, water supply, sewerage and electricity) and the signage has been renewed. This action will not only alleviate the traffic jams on the La Zubia and Cájar roads, but also on the Ronda Sur, as it includes improvements to the connecting branches.

Finally, the work has also involved a reinforcement of the road surface and the construction of a cycle-pedestrian lane that gives continuity to the existing itinerary and segregated from road traffic on the GR-3211 provincial road, allowing a safe connection to travel on foot or by bike from La Zubia to the Nasrid capital.

The Consejería de Fomento and the Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano del Área de Granada are in contact with the Granada City Council to give continuity to this reserved platform on an urban road, from La Sultana street to Tierno Galván street, near the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Granada. In this way, the bus lines would have a public transport corridor from the metropolitan crown to the new South interchange, which this Ministry put into service last April with three stops to serve about 2,500 passengers per day.
